On Thursday, March 27, something truly special took place at Hudson 29 on Lane Avenue for Dave Shelby, a longtime educator and principal at Upper Arlington High School. It all began when Tommy O'Shaughnessy reached out to Cameron Mitchell, the owner of the popular restaurant, to share a heartwarming story about Dave Shelby, a beloved community member.
Every Thursday, Mr. Shelby makes his weekly pilgrimage to Hudson 29, where he sits in the same booth and orders his favorite cocktail: a Gibson. Early on, the restaurant didn’t carry the kind of cocktail onions that Mr. Shelby preferred, so he took matters into his own hands and began bringing his own supply. His favorite onions soon became the official cocktail garnish of Hudson 29—a delightful, if quirky, tradition that speaks to the personal touch Mr. Shelby brings everywhere he goes.
Tommy, inspired by Mr. Shelby's loyalty and connection to Hudson 29, decided it would be a fitting tribute to honor him in a way that was both meaningful and memorable. He approached Amanda, the restaurant manager, and together, they came up with a brilliant idea: rename the Gibson cocktail to "The Shelby,"Â in honor of the man who had made it such a cherished part of Hudson 29. They even drew up a proclamation, which Cameron Mitchell signed, and prepared to present it to Mr. Shelby the following evening.
Lasting Impression: A Heartfelt Surprise
On March 27, Mr. Shelby arrived at Hudson 29, unaware of the surprise awaiting him. The moment he was presented with the proclamation and learned that the Gibson cocktail would now bear his name, his reaction was nothing short of touching. Overcome with emotion, Mr. Shelby expressed his deep gratitude for Upper Arlington and the many students he had come to know and love over the years. He spoke fondly of his connection to the community, particularly the Class of UA69, who have always included him in reunions and social gatherings.
For many of those present, including former students, it was a chance to reflect on the lasting impact Mr. Shelby has had on their lives. Some of them shared their own memories, and there was a shared sense of admiration for the man who, even at 95 years old, continues to inspire those around him.
Incredibly, Mr. Shelby still drives himself to Hudson 29 each week, a testament to his sharp mind and enduring spirit. As the group gathered together, it was clear that Mr. Shelby had not changed much since the days when they all walked the halls of Upper Arlington High School. His wit, humor, and genuine love for the people who have crossed his path over the years were palpable, and it was a moment that left everyone with a deep sense of appreciation.
A Toast to the Golden Bear Spirit
Alumni who were present for this special occasion included Tommy O'Shaughnessy, who conceived the idea; Mike Miely; his wife Betsy Atkinson Miely (Class of 1970); Dick Dunkel; Bill France; and Ellen Isaly Clark. In one of the photos taken that evening, you can see Dick Dunkel taking the first official sip of the newly christened "Shelby" cocktail.
Ellen shared, "Honoring Mr. Shelby shows just how much he's meant to all of us, and how much we appreciate this special educator and friend."
Tommy added, "This tribute was such a small way to give back to someone who's done so much for our community. Watching Dave’s reaction was truly unforgettable."
It was a moment to celebrate not just a favorite drink, but the enduring spirit of a man who has left an indelible mark on the community. With a cocktail in hand, all those present agreed that they were looking forward to many more years of Golden Bear life with Dave Shelby at its heart.
