***** SPECIAL ISSUE! *****

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10 from 7:30 - 11:30 PM

Several months ago, as part of The Ravens' celebration of 50 Years of Rock 'n Roll, Jeff Shaw ("Sloopy"), UAHS Class of 1964, approached the UA Alumni Association and offered to perform at a function to raise funds for UAAA.The band's earlier milestone anniversary gatherings had generated proceeds for several other non-profit organizations, but with The Ravens' UA-roots, Shaw felt that partnering with the Alumni Association for the 50th would be special. We have been working to organize this Dance Party to be a step back into the 1960's when The Ravens performed at all the coolest events around town. Their name and music were synonymous with the best parties and the most fun!

The Rock Fest will be an ultra-casual night of music and fun, with great food and beverages supplied by Andy Schmidt '74 of Schmidt's Catering! Gather your friends and buy your tickets early. SPACE IS LIMITED!

At the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England, Abby Johnston '88 and her teammate, Kelci Bryant, captured the Silver Medal in women's synchronized 3-meter diving to earn the USA's first Olympic medal in the sport.

The team successfully completed the last of five dives — a back 2½ somersault — and scored 321.90 points. That secured their second-place finish.

Abby began diving in 2002. Diving for Duke University, Abby was a member of the national team in 2006, and from 2008 - 2012. Abby's honors include:

National Champion (3-meter Springboard - 2011) ... All-America (1-meter - 2010, 2011; 3-meter - 2009, 2011) ... ACC Champion (1-meter - 2010, 2011; 3-meter - 2009, 2010, 2011) ... ACC Most Valuable Diver (2010, 2011) ... ACC Women's Diver of the Year (2010, 2011) ... All-ACC (1-meter - 2010, 2011; 3-meter - 2009, 2011) ... All-ACC Academic (2009, 2010, 2011) ... ACC Academic Honor Roll (2009, 2010, 2011).

On October 5, Abby returned home to UAHS to attend the Golden Bear Homecoming football game. She signed autographs and met with UA residents, who are very proud that one of our own Golden Bear athletes set an Olympic world record: First American Olympic medal in Synchronized Diving! CONGRATULATIONS, Abby!

Have you visited our Alumni Web sites page lately? Many of our alums have sent in the addresses of their personal or company sites, and we've linked to each of them. They are organized by graduation year. You know how it is: people like to do business with people they know and trust, and it's interesting and fun to look through these Web sites to find out what kinds of businesses, organizations, and hobbies our fellow UAHS grads are involved in and enjoy.

Every few months, we will feature several of these Alumni Web sites. If you would like for us to link to your Web site, please email us your web site address and we will add you! You could be featured next!

These activities include the 4th of July Block Party, the annual selection of Outstanding and Distinguished Alumni, the Golden Bear [Pre-Hibernation] Rock Fest, and determination of content for the Web site.

We would like to offer you the opportunity to place an ad on one of the pages of with a link to your web site. has a steady flow of traffic throughout the year, with the highest traffic from January through July, when alums are involved in reunion planning and are looking up classmates and searching for reunion information. Traffic also spikes when Traditions is sent out (quarterly), as the newsletter contains links that direct our alums to various pages of the web site.

Your BEAR BANNER ad at the top of a page will be viewed by thousands of people each week, as we have several hundred visitors daily. We believe that our alums value doing business with other alums, and it's one more way we can enjoy and benefit from the bond of being UA alums. The ads are priced very reasonably, with DISCOUNTS for EXISTING UAAA MEMBERS.

Please visit our Banner Ads page, where we have posted a chart showing banner ad prices according to the page on which they are displayed. Prices vary according to page traffic. Each ad will run for three months, and requests for placement will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. This is a cost-effective, productive way to share your business and web site with thousands of Upper Arlington High School alumni! While implementing your marketing strategies, you will be supporting our UA Alumni Association. We appreciate your help!

SPECIAL NOTE: If you enjoy visiting, or if you attend your reunions, or if you enjoy reading news about your classmates and other UAHS alums in Traditions, won't you PLEASE help support the Upper Arlington Alumni Association with a membership at one of the levels below? We are really working to be able to keep our Web site free and available to everyone, and we really do need our alums' financial help. PLEASE JOIN UAAA TODAY! If you are already a member, please encourage your classmates to join.

Thank you so much to all of you who pay dues to the UAAA. These dues are critical to the support of our organization. Many alums think that funding for the Alumni Association comes from the school district. WRONG! We are completely self-sustaining and need these dues in order to maintain our database of nearly 30,000 graduates and to pay the costs of running our Web site,

We do not restrict our Web site to dues-paying members. We enjoy making it available to EVERYONE, members or not. However, over the past few years, we have seen our number of dues-paying members decline. We need YOU! Our tax-deductible dues are modest, so it is our goal to increase membership, and we hope that we can count on you. Membership in UAAA is available at four levels:

$20 / year
Reunion - 5 years
$80 (One year free!)
$250: one-time!
Golden Bear
 $500: one-time!
SPECIAL: We offer a payment plan for the Life and Golden Bear Membership levels! You can commit to the level you wish and pay it off over 10 months; they don't even need to be consecutive months. We truly hope that you will help us out at whatever level is comfortable for you, and we thank you for your support AT ANY LEVEL!

Some people are online a great deal and prefer to pay with Paypal; others prefer printing the membership form and mailing us a check. We appreciate your dues, and we want to make it easy for you, so please select your preferred method of payment.:

    2013 REUNIONS

It seems like a long time until the weekend of July 4, 2013, but some of the class reunion chairs are already beginning to make plans for their celebrations. If you are in one of the following classes, we hope you'll plan to attend your reunion and catch up with longtime friends and classmates.

As the reunion coordinators send us information about their parties, we will post the details on each class reunion page of You can check this page to see if your class has a web site or Facebook page that you can visit as well.

Jill Henderson Knowlden, Class of 1974, has set up a Facebook page called "You know you are from Upper Arlington if ... " and you can go there to reminisce with the rest of us who grew up here and have wonderful, fun memories of our community and schools. The page has become a very popular place for alumni to reconnect and share their fondest recollections of growing up as a Golden Bear.

What special memories do you have of UA - things about it back then that made it unique, or qualities it still has that make it stand out as spectacular?

You can visit the "You Know You're from UA If ..." Facebook page here.

The Upper Arlington Civic Association, established in 1913, has planned and executed community events to bring the residents of Upper Arlington together throughout the year.

UAAA works closely with UACA with regard to the Fourth of July; UACA brings us the parade, the Party in the Park, and the fireworks, all on the 4th. They select the parade theme, the Grand Marshall, and they are the organization who plans every aspect of the well-known and much-loved Upper Arlington Fourth of July parade.

UACA has begun producing a newsletter, and we are going to provide it to you on We hope that it will be a helpful tool for all our alums who live in the area and want to be aware of details regarding UACA events, including the Easter Egg Hunt, the Memorial Day Run, the Fourth of July, Labor Neighbor Day, the Golden Bear Scare (Halloween), and the Christmas in the Park events. See the 2012 UACA newsletters here.

Because we respect our alums' privacy, we list names and email addresses on ONLY when they are personally submitted by the alum. When we started in 2000, we had approximately 320 email addresses in our database; we currently have more than 13,000 alums' email addresses listed on!

If you are not listed on your class page but wish to be, please send in your information. If you notice that one of your classmates isn't listed, please contact that person and ask him or her to visit and personally submit his or her information. And if you see someone's name on the Lost list at the bottom of each class page, and you know his or her location, please let us know, or contact that classmate and ask him or her to contact UAAA.

Our goal is to maintain the most complete and accurate database that we possibly can. We are asking for your help! And thank you to those of you who have helped us through your membership dues; your financial help allows us to provide the ongoing hosting and maintenance fees of our Web site.
