Karen Waldbillig Kasich '81 will become Ohio's First Lady in January when her husband, John Kasich is sworn in as Governor of Ohio. Congratulations to the Kasichs! Karen and John have twin daughters, Emma and Reese, and they live in Westerville.

The summer holidays were very busy times for those of us in the Upper Arlington Alumni Association and the Upper Arlington Education Foundation. The Fourth of July reunions and UAAA Block Party roll right into prep time for the annual UAEF fundraiser, the Golden Bear Bash! which is held each year on the Sunday night of Labor Day Weekend. We thank you for your patience in the delay of our newsletter!

With these two big events, we wish to issue the following thank you notes ...

Dear Mother Nature,

We all would like to thank you for the perfect weather you provided over the 4th of July weekend. The day of the parade was absolutely PERFECT, and everyone who held a party, participated in the parade, or watched from the sidewalk truly appreciated your cooperation. The entire weekend was fantastic, making all of the reunion activities very successful. Any chances you could come through the same way next year?? See photos from our Block Party here.

Dear John Kost '74 - REMAX Premier Choice Realtors:

On behalf of all UA graduates and the Upper Arlington community, we would like to thank you, John Kost '74, for sponsoring the UAAA Block Party on the Barrington field for the 10th consecutive year! The record-breaking attendance is testament to the great party you host, and we are most grateful for your generosity. Thank you for your ongoing generous financial support of our Alumni Association! This party would not be possible without you.

Dear Class Reunion Coordinators from 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005:

We would like to remind you of what a wonderful service you provide to your classes by volunteering to coordinate your class reunions. You spend enormous amounts of time and energy planning the details, finding lost classmates, reminding friends to please RSVP, decorating and cleaning up, and if you didn't hear it enough, the UAAA would like to say, "THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! " You all are GREAT GOLDEN BEARS!

Dear Staff of the UA Schools:

The UAAA could not offer the range of events we like to make available to our alums without the tremendous support of the UA Schools. We greatly appreciate the fact that staff members at Barrington, Burbank, Jones and UAHS left their own families for part of the holiday weekend to enable our alums to revisit and share these special places with their classmates and families. To all of you who helped out: THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Dear Members of the UA Civic Association:

Our heartfelt thanks go to UACA for once again providing the community with the BEST day of the year in UA. We especially would like to recognize and thank the steering committee, Jeff Scholl '85 and his wife, Becky Scholl; Andy Weeks '89 and his wife, Carolyn Weeks; Andrew Wade '89 and his wife, Lissa Wade; and Lisa Zuber Berens '84 and her husband, Mark Berens. The UAAA is very proud of our dedicated alums for this year and all years past who make sure that our beloved UA traditions from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm continue with the same spirit year after year. THANK YOU ALL!

Dear Class of 1950:

Thank you for choosing to direct class gifts to the Andy Tice Memorial Fund at the UA Education Foundation as a way to honor your classmate Pete Edwards for his help with your class reunions. When classes give back to the school district, it is always deeply appreciated by the students and families who benefit from your thoughtfulness. It brings a tear to the eye when you consider the fact that a class who is celebrating their 60-year reunion is contributing to a fund that memorializes a young man who would have graduated this coming spring. It truly illustrates that it doesn't matter when you attended the UA Schools ... we have all been part of something wonderful, and we share a unique and special bond as Golden Bears.

Dear Class of 1960:

Imagine the administration's surprise and excitement over the new Class of 1960 Staff Development Fund. What a great way to recognize your 50-year reunion and give back to the district! The staff development budget is always in need of extra help, and with your class's generosity, our faculty will have one more resource to tap into for opportunities that keep them at the forefront of education. Your vision and generosity are most appreciated!

Dear Class of 1969:

Thank you for your $1,000+ donation to establish a permanent honorarium / memorial for your class. You will be listed on all UAEF publications and on our web site as being part of this generous group of alums. Your class if a great example of the fact that even the largest classes can stay well-connected with effort. Thank you for your generosity to UAEF!

Dear Scott Berry '80:

What a fantastic idea it was to organize and host an alumni motorcycle ride for the Fourth of July weekend! We hope that you and the other riders enjoyed the beautiful weather - please see Thank You Note #1 - and we hope that you or someone else will organize the same even next year. In Upper Arlington, if you do something once, there is a good chance that it will become a tradition, and based on the success of this first ride, it appears that this could be the "Annual UAAA Motorcycle Ride"!

Dear Corey Columbo '93 and Kevin Sheriff '93:

When you contacted us about organizing an open house at Burbank to recognize the 25th anniversary of its closing, we were happy to help connect you with district officials and publicize the reunion. We thank you for putting together a very successful and special day that included more than 200 former students, friends and staff. Thank you for commemorating this milestone for making it so special for so many who have fond memories of Burbank School.

Dear Alumni and Businesses who supported the 4th annual Golden Bear Bash!:

RECORD BREAKING attendance (500+) and profits ($89,000 net profit) made the 4th annual Golden Bear Bash! a smash of a night! On September 5 (The Bash! is always held on the Sunday night of Labor Day weekend), the UAEF Trustees and Golden Bear Bash! Committee members put on a fantastic night of dinner, dancing, and wonderful Live and Silent auction prizes. Our deepest thanks to the alums and community businesses who came out in full force and helped raise money for the General Unrestricted Fund and Endowment at the the UAAA's parent organization, the Upper Arlington Education Foundation. If you couldn't attend this year, please mark your calendars for next year. Same night - Sunday night of Labor Day Weekend! If you have a business that would like to be a sponsor or auction donor, we are starting NOW on next year's event and would love to have you vas a partner! Please e-mail Joanie Dugger at

The Educators Hall of Fame was established in 2005 by Principal Kip Greenhill and the UAHS faculty to honor retired teachers and administrators for their lasting influence on their students and fellow educators.

The 2010 UAHS Educators' Hall of Fame inductees are: Jean Guddat, Marv Moorehead, and Phil Wagner.

You can read about each of these fine educators on our Announcements page. Thank you to all our alums who visited our Messageboard and posted comments about our many nominees. Your posts initiated extensive conversations and memories about these excellent teachers.

Our Web site began in 2000 with just 320 names and email addresses. A great deal has changed in the ten years since our once-tiny Web site made its debut, and today, we store a database of nearly 13, 000 alumni names and email addresses!

To ensure that our alums feel confident about submitting their names and email addresses and that they don't need to worry about being targeted for spam, we have recently converted the database to a more secure, robust format. If you are not already listed on, please send us your information by visiting the Add My Email page of, and join in on the fun!

Please also pass along this newsletter to your UA alumni friends who may not be listed on, and encourage them to join us.

Improvements to do cost us money, so if you enjoy this Web site and visit often, please consider supporting it through a contribution to UAAA! Thank you!

Have you visited our Alumni Web sites page lately? Many of our alums have sent in the addresses of their personal or company sites, and we've linked to each of them. They are organized by graduation year. You know how it is: people like to do business with people they know and trust, and it's fun to look through these Web sites to find out what kinds of businesses, organizations, and hobbies our fellow UAHS grads are involved in and enjoy.

Each month, we will feature three of these Alumni Web sites. You can see the first three on our Announcements page right now. If you would like for us to link to your Web site, please email us and we will add you! Thank you!

The Messageboard is a great place to initiate and join in on conversations about everything from fun memories of UA to current news about our alums. Sometimes we receive a note about how all the news on the Messageboard seems to be about passings and other tragedies, so please come and post fun announcements! Tell us about your graduation, your wedding, your new baby, your career, or your retirement! Just set up a free account and sign on (please use your real name and graduation year!) to join in! See you there!

Thanks so much to all of you who pay dues to the UAAA. These dues are critical to the support of our organization. Many alums think that funding for the Alumni Association comes from the school district. WRONG! We are completely self-sustaining and need these dues in order to maintain our database of nearly 30,000 graduates and to pay the costs of running our Web site, We are proud that we do not require a login and password for our Web site and we do not restrict it to dues-paying members. However, over the past few years, we have seen our number of dues-paying members decline. We need YOU! Our tax-deductible dues are modest, so it is our goal to increase membership, and we hope that we can count on you. Membership in UAAA is available at four levels:

Annual      $15 / year
Reunion - 5 years      $60 (One year free!)
Life      $250: one-time!
Golden Bear      $500: one-time!
NEW THIS YEAR: We are offering a payment plan for the Life and Golden Bear Membership levels! You may commit to the level you wish and pay it off over 10 months; they don't even need to be consecutive months. We truly hope that you will help us out at whatever level is comfortable for you, and we thank you for your support AT ANY LEVEL!

Some people are online a great deal and prefer to pay with Paypal; others prefer printing the membership form and mailing us a check. We appreciate your dues, and we want to make it easy for you, so please select your preferred method of payment.:

Our goal is to maintain the most complete and accurate database that we possibly can. We are asking for your help! And thank you to those of you who have helped us through your membership dues; your financial help allows us to provide the ongoing hosting and maintenance fees of our Web site.
