Gordon Mitchell, Class of 1969
I took Army ROTC at Ohio State because I got a low number (92) on the draft lottery. That was a big mistake. Although, I got good grades in ROTC, there were attempts to dis-enroll me from the program and draft me. I graduated and was commissioned in June, 1973, but had to wait until next April to go in. That shot my chances of finding a permanent full-time job. I was in the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. That branch was closest to my major. After a few months, they determined I wasn't officer material and they sent me home. If I knew back then what I know now I would never have gone in, even if that meant going to Canada. It was the Army that made me a Democrat.

After Boot Camp at Ft. Knox he was selected to attend Army Language School, Monterey, CA as a student of Mandarin Chinese. He was then assigned to the National Security Agency as a cryptanalyst (code breaker). His success there as a military assignee resulted in his transferring to the Agency as a civilian where his service to his country continued and took him to the Far East. Here his service became even more highly classified and though we lived there for three years, his TDYs were only listed as business trips and I lived in blissful ignorance until a few facts came to light decades later. His service to his country lasted far more than his three years in uniform and he put his life on the line more than once.
